The University of Liverpool has announced that the new Head of Modern Languages and Cultures will be Professor Matthew Philpotts, currently based in German Studies in the School of Arts, Languages & Cultures at the University of Manchester. Professor Philpotts will become Head of Department on 1 August 2016, taking over from Professor Chris Harris whose term comes to an end this summer.
Professor Philpotts is currently completing his latest book project, Editing the 20th Century, a comparative study of the unique role played by the editors of literary and intellectual magazines, particularly in Germany, France, and Britain. He has written widely on the literary and cultural history of the German dictatorships, an interest that he is currently exploring through the material legacy of those regimes at sites in Eastern Germany such as the Nazi holiday resort at Prora and the V2 rocket testing site at Peenemünde.
I’m really excited to be moving to Liverpool to take up the Chair and Headship of Modern Languages and Cultures and to be joining a department with such ambitious plans for the future – Matthew Philpotts
Dr Philpotts assumes the headship at a time when Modern Languages & Cultures is planning for the next Research Excellence Framework, responding to the challenges of recruitment, and awaiting the publication of the public feedback on the Government’s Green Paper on Higher Education.
