Matt Ward BA (2014, French & Business Studies) currently works as an auditor for Ernst & Young, and came to Liverpool from Somerset in 2010. Matt graduated with a first, and during his time at the University of Liverpool, he was President of the Athletic Union and Captain of the Rugby Union first XV squad.
Matt applied to the University of Liverpool because of the flexibility of the degree programme, meaning that in addition to learning aspects of French cultural identity, he particularly enjoyed the business language aspects of his degree, which included mock interviews in French, and the writing of business projects in the target language.
Matt spent his year abroad as an English language assistant in Albi, in the south-west of France, where he was able to continue to play rugby as well as perfect his French. Matt attributes the progress he made during his year abroad to both his social life as part of the rugby club – which included a tour to Glasgow – and sharing a flat with first-language French speakers.
My year abroad remains the best year of my life and the syllabus really did surpass my expectations – Matt Ward
To Matt’s delight, he continues to use French on a daily basis at work, since he has two clients from France with whom he works solely in French. In addition, Matt has continued to play rugby and now runs the Ernst & Young rugby team which not only enhances life in London, but also means that – as during his student days – he leaves work early on a Wednesday.
