Eve Rosenhaft, Professor of German Historical Studies, recently ran a workshop on History, Archives and Human Rights in Romani Studies at the University of Liverpool. The event was funded by the Council of Europe through the European Academic Network on Romani Studies, and was co-organised by Professor Rosenhaft, Dr Celia Donert (Lecturer in History, Liverpool) and Dr. Ilsen About (Université d’Aix-Marseille).
The workshop brought together young scholars and community workers from the UK, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and the Netherlands. Sessions were led by the organisers, Henriette Asséo (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales), Katy Hooper (SJL Special collections), and Margaret Procter (Centre for Archive Studies, History, Liverpool). In particular, the organisers drew on the Gypsy Collections housed at Liverpool’s Sydney Jones Library as an example of the opportunities and challenges offered by the very mixed archival record on Gypsies.
