In the second CLAS graduate profile, we catch up with Patrick Henry, who read French at the University of Liverpool and graduated in the summer of 2008. Having spent his year abroad as an English Language Assistant in Montélimar, Patrick returned to France on graduation to spend the summer working near Biarritz and a winter working in the Alps. Having always enjoyed a tipple as a student, Patrick developed a more professional interest in wine and, as consequence, applied for a place on the Majestic Wine graduate scheme. From 2009, Patrick spent two and a half years progressing through the retail management scheme at Majestic, working in several different stores and studying for wine exams as well as enjoying a little wine-related travel and participating in the vendanges in Bordeaux.
Having learnt all he could possibly need to know about wine, Patrick decided to look for a career change and a job which would put his French skills into use. One of his passions is travel, and a job at Alastair Sawday Publishing seemed the right choice to combine this interest with his language skills. Having been part of the Sawday’s team for a little over six months now, Patrick looks after French B&B, hôtel and chateau owners who feature in the Sawday’s collections. In the office he is surrounded by the French language; French colleagues on either side and mostly French owners at the end of the telephone and on email. Coupled with a recent tour of several Sawday’s properties in France, Patrick quips “It is not surprising that I am thoroughly enjoying this career path!”
