The year abroad monthly photo competition got off to a flying start with the entries submitted for the self-explanatory theme of first impressions. The standard of photography was so high that the judges chose two winners, and three runners-up. Here are the winning photos:

Mexicans eating tacos by Alessandra McAllister (left)

Alessandra said, “I took this photo of Mexicans eating tacos on Calle Républica de Cuba, Centro Historico, México DF. Mexico is the fattest country in the world before the US and the UK, it’s obvious why…”

Fontaine Poseidon, Antigone by Kate Sotheby (right)

Kate said, “Montpellier is known as ‘La ville aux 100 fontaines’ [the city of 100 fountains] and this one in the Antigone district, where I live, has to be my favourite”.

The three runners-up photos (below) were taken by Ami Cooper (Castle Wall from Below, Óbidos), Rachael Vashak (Reims panorama) and Alessandra McAllister (Calle Isabel la Católica, Mexico City)
