Juan Arana Cobos is the new Etxepare Institute Basque irakurle (lecturer). Juan graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with a “licenciatura” in Philosophy. He holds a PhD in Basque Studies from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was a teaching assistant, research assistant and research scholar.
His research interests focus on Basque Art and thought, especially on the figure of Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza. Juan´s dissertation “Jorge Oteiza: Art as Sacrament, Avant-Garde and Magic” is to be published this year by the Center for Basque Studies Press. A further comparative study on the same matter under the title “Oteiza y Unamuno, dos tragedias epigonales de la modernidad” is also scheduled to be published this year under the auspices of the Foundation and Museum Jorge Oteiza in Navarre, Spain.
Juan is looking forward to introducing staff and students at Liverpool to Basque studies, and hopes to see you all at the official launch of Basque Studies at the forthcoming Allison Peers Symposium.
