Dr Godfried Croenen will be the Lester J. Cappon Visiting Fellow at the Newberry Library in Chicago during the month of August 2011.
Dr Croenen, who is currently on research leave, is researching the genesis of the 14th-century Chronicles of Jean Froissart. He recently identified a unique manuscript of the chronicle in the collection of the Newberry Library, which contains a version of the chronicle that has not survived anywhere else.
The Newberry Library, an independent library in the city of Chicago founded by a bequest of the wealthy businessman Walter L. Newberry, has one of the most important collections of medieval manuscripts in America. The manuscript Dr Croenen will be studying was in a Welsh private collection near Aberystwyth in the 19th century but was acquired by the Newberry from a London dealer in 1937.
