RILAS Research Seminar, 7 April

4:00 pm Lecture Room 3 LAS Building

Prof. Peter Hallward (Kingston University, Modern European Philosophy): “Containing Democracy: Haiti 1990-2010

‘The Haitian elite owes its privileges to exclusion, exploitation and violence, and only quasi-monopoly control of violent power allows it to retain them. The Lavalas mobilisation for democracy which began in the 1980s threatened that monopoly, and with it those privileges. This threat has been disarmed in a number of ways over the past twenty years, restoring a degree of ‘stability’ to the status quo in spite of the several upheavals (earthquake, cholera, illegitimate elections…) that marked 2010.’

Wine reception to follow. All welcome!

See the RILAS website for details of upcoming seminars.
